The longer you live in London, you discover more favourite corners of the city, uncover more curiosities and develop a deeper intolerance towards anything even vaguely touristic.

As one of the world's most popular holiday destinations, 20 million visitors descend upon the city every year. So when your turn rolls around to host one of them, the quest to create a tolerable itinerary begins. There are only so many times you need to see the crown jewels, or worse, join the queue for £9 strawberries with a drizzle of molten chocolate at Borough Market.

As an American transplant to London, I am no stranger to this conundrum, often receiving invitations to meet up from friends I haven't spoken to in years – with the thinly veiled expectation of delivering a unique experience through a local lens. And there can be intense pressure to deliver, some visitors may only get this one chance to see this marvellous city.
